Gold Town Nickelodeon Update - June 1, 2007
Dog" is responsible for some of the quirkier fare to come out of Hollywood in
recent years. Two Jack Black vehicles, "Nacho Libre", and "The School of Rock" and
a few independents, the excellent "The Good Girl", the soulful "Orange County", and
the compelling "Chuck & Buck". "The Year of the Dog" is his directorial debut.
"The Year of the Dog" stars Molly Shannon (of the classic
"when-I'm-nervous-I-like-to-smell-my-armpits Mary Katharine Gallagher schoolgirl
Saturday Night Live skit).
This movie involves a beagle.
I say this only because, as a child, I had a beagle. Sheila. I know of no more
soulful a dog, cute, with kind brown eyes, and resonant bray (particularly when
chasing hares), than Sheila. A roamer, a digger, mischievous to the core, yes, but
good natured and sweet and loved people. Sure, the yard looked like hell but she
was never mean.
Sheila the Beagle comes to mind because this week's movie hinges upon a love story
between a woman and her beagle. The rationale side of me says sarcastically
"that'll carry a movie". Yet the kid who left his jacket at the trail head because
Sheila didn't come when called, he came back the next day to find her sleeping,
wrapped cozy in his jacket. Well, that kid believes it.
Rated PG-13 for some suggestive references. (huh?)

Gold Town Nickelodeon Update - May 16, 2007
Mira Nair is the India-born and Manhattan-based director who highlighted India's changing place in the world, and changing views of itself, with "Mississippi Masala" and "Monsoon Wedding". ("Monsoon Wedding", by the way, highlights people eating really big flowers, which is, for no good reason, mildly disturbing.) Mira Nair also directed Reese Witherspoon in 2004's "Vanity Fair".
Her latest film follows a traditional family immigrating to Manhattan in the late 1970s. They have a son who, as a young man, rejects his India heritage. The path through which the son finds a sense of himself and his "namesake" makes up the path of the story. The son is played by Kal Penn, of "Harold and Kumar" fame, and he is getting rave reviews for his performance. Critics are raving about how this film "breathes in a way nearly unheard of at today's multiplexes." Which is impressive as any breathing movie might be. You can read more reviews at http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0433416/externalreviews.
This movie is rated (PG-13) for sexuality/nudity, a scene of drug use, some disturbing images and brief language.

MOVIE - The Lives of Others
There are many charms of Juneau' Goldtown Nickelodeon theater - the quiet blowers, the warm and cozy February movies, the hi-tec cash register, the even more advanced seat cushioning system, and the brewer's yeast for your popcorn. Perhaps everyone's most dear Nickelodeon feature is that every movie breaks half-way into the film. Fortunately, this rarely occurs during the revealing of a story point or when the action is building.
Thus, with this week's movie, an era has ended. We have a new machine that will allow the whole film to run without an intermission. The machine is called a MUT. I have no idea what the acronym stands for, but lets hope it doesn't turn into a dog.
Sorry about that.
This week's movie, "The Lives of Others" is a thriller, and thus a great first movie for the new system because THERE WON'T BE A BREAK IN THE TENSION! Very exciting. Not only is this film a thriller; it is the OSCAR winner for best foreign film. It has won a ton of other awards as well. Check out http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0405094/awards
Kenneth Turan, our NPR guiding light, "A potent narrative about the transformative effect of involvement in other people's stories, "Lives" turns its own story into a python-tight embrace of nuanced tension and emotional connection. It convincingly demonstrates that when done right, moral and political quandaries can be the most intensely dramatic dilemmas of all."
This movie is rated (R)for some sexuality and nudity.

Gold Town Nickelodeon Update April 27, 2007
Directed by Ken Loach
As expected, with a name like "The Gale that Scours the Top Soil", this week's Nickelodeon film is a comedy. This film stars the affable Cillian Murphy, who has starred in such up beat laugh fests like "28 Days" and "Girl with a Pearl Earring".
So, it's not a comedy. As expected, with a name like "The Blow that Crushes the Pringles", it's a tragedy. It's 1920, and Ireland, home of the potato. Damien and Teddy are brothers. Teddy is leader of a guerrilla squad fighting for independence. Damien is a medical student in London. After witness to atrocities committed by the English, Damien's thinned and brittle soul is shattered; he joins the resistance led by his brother Teddy. Well written and acted drama ensues.
Kenneth Turan, "Both sides have strongly thought-out points of view, the film tips its hand neither one way nor the other, and, given that the consequences of the actions taken have lasted until today, it's all a rather thrilling situation."
This film won the Golden Palm at Cannes - equivalent to best picture.
I look forward to a Juneau based remake - "The Breeze that Quakes the Quinoa".
This movie is rated (R)

"The film of the season, if not the year, is a Southern California slice-of-life from 1977 that hasn't aged a day..A stirring and sophisticated evocation of working-class Watts...As fresh and observational as it was 30 years ago. Killer of Sheep seems even more universal now. Killer of Sheep is an urban pastoral...sweet, sardonic, deeply sad and very funny."
- Village Voice
"An American masterpiece. Independent to the bone."
- New York Times
In 1977, the year of Star Wars, a UCLA graduate student, Charles Burnett, shot and cut his thesis film "Killer of Sheep". It is now considered a masterpiece.
"...it speaks to the enduring power of poetic cinema, of films with genuine artistic vision that create mood and capture emotion in ways only motion pictures can...It's considered such a landmark of both American independent and African American cinema that it was one of the first 50 culturally significant films selected for preservation in the Library of Congress by the National Film Registry."
And that, considering there has never been a theatrical release of this film, until this year - 30 years after it was made.
This movie is not rated.

Steven Soderbergh is so good it makes me cry. This director coaxed a good peformance out of Jennifer Lopez. If that isn't a sign of true genius, then consider "Monster in Law", "Maid in Manhatten", or her pinnacle, "Gigli". Or better yet, never consider them. Soderbergh is responsible for "The Limey", "Erin Brockovich", and his masterpiece, "Traffic". The J. Lo. movie, by the way, was "Out of Sight"; the excellent film that woke people up to George Clooney as something more than his ER haircut.
Soderbergh's latest is this week's film at the Nickelodeon. "The Good German", starring Soderbergh stalwart Clooney, and the always amazing Cate Blanchette, is an experiment in film noir, shot in black and white, and getting rave reviews.
The blurb: "While in post-war Berlin to cover the Potsdam Conference, an American military journalist is drawn into a murder investigation which involves his former mistress and his driver."
This movie is rated (R) for language, violence and some sexual content.
