Larry Coryell

JUNEAU: Versatile virtuoso guitarist Larry Coryell will dazzle and intrigue a fortunate audience in the final weekend of the 2005 Juneau Jazz & Classics, Friday, May 27th at ANB Hall. Tickets are at Hearthside Books and on the web at www.jazzandclassics.org.

Larry Coryell, one of the world’s most acknowledged jazz masters, is a jazz fusion pioneer and seasoned musical traveler between the worlds of rock, jazz, classical and Brazilian rhythms. His innovative driving lines and dazzling technique, crafty use of space and complex chord structures generate an intensity matched by his remarkable ability to improvise. All of Larry’s work, both singly and collectively, highlights Larry’s uncanny ability to revisit jazz standards and imbue them with new life and ideas. He brings to them his years of experience in playing, listening and learning and synthesizes them into something greater than the sum of their parts.

Larry Coryell has recorded more than 70 albums over the past 35 years and is hailed by his fans as of “the guitar gods” in the late 1970s and as a “truly Renaissance musician who excels at all styles of playing.” The New York Times dubbed him as “the Godfather of Fusion.”
It was in the late sixties and early seventies that Larry Coryell became one of the most in-demand guitarists in rock, jazz and all musical genres. During that time he was featured in sessions with the likes of Jimmy Webb, Charles Mingus, Billy Cobham and Chick Corea. He emerged from this period as a musical legend that merged rock, jazz, Eastern modes and scales and free-form improvisation with classical riffs.

Mark Egan

Larry Coryell’s Juneau performance will include seven time Grammy Award Winner, Paul Wertico, drums, and Mark Egan, bass – both former members of the Pat Metheny Group.
Mark Egan is considered to be one of the most respected and in-demand electric bassists on the music scene today. He has recorded with the likes of Sting, Arcadia, Joan Osborne; and has performed in movies and television shows as Aladdin, The Color of Money, A Chorus Line, NBC Sports and numerous award winning television commercials.

Paul Wertico

Self taught drummer Paul Wertico became a professional at the age of 15. His unique playing has been compared to that of “an impressionist painter,” while at the same time he has been described as “an inspired madman” and a “restless innovator.” Hailed as “one of the most musical and well-rounded drummers in music today”, Wertico has appeared on acid jazz records, played big band charts, backed up touring acts such as the Drifters, and performed in the movie soundtrack “The Falcon and the Snowman.”

The Larry Coryell Trio performance is sponsored by Aspen Hotels and KTOO.

Free Clinics

Juneau Jazz & Classics is pleased to offer a very special gift to local musicians in the form of free clinics by Paul Wertico and Larry Coryell, Saturday, May 28th, 10:00 a.m. at the University of Alaska Southeast. These clinics, each two hours in length, will offer an up close and personal opportunity to learn and play with these two jazz-rock legends. Participants will leave these workshops with new techniques to enhance expression, endurance, tone and musicality.

The 19th Juneau Jazz & Classics, May 20-28, will include concerts held in a variety of venues such as the Juneau-Douglas High School Auditorium, three concert cruises, the intimate Westmark Baranof Hotel, the picturesque church, ANB Hall, Chapel by the Lake and the State Office Building’s atrium. Festival highlights include jazz, classical and blues headliners in concert.

Juneau Jazz & Classics Educates – In a Fun Way

Workshops have been a primary focus, but not a highly visible part of the annual Juneau Jazz & Classics. Beyond the performances, the lights, and the stage – professional jazz and classical artists teach local music lovers, children, bands and musicians important skills such as expression, endurance, tone and musicality. The 2005 Festival, set to begin May 20th, will offer more workshops and clinics than ever before. Tickets available at Hearthside Books and on the web at www.jazzandclassics.org, and will be available at the door.

The 2005 Juneau Jazz & Classics, May 20-28, will welcome twenty-eight jazz, classical and blues artists. Many of these artists will reside in Juneau throughout the Festival – teaching, performing, and interacting with community members.

Public Workshops & Clinics

Education & Outreach

Three local elementary schools will benefit from an interactive assembly performance featuring jazz saxophonist Roger Neumann & The Headliners with vocalist Madeline Vergari. These assembly performances will be anything but dull, as kids will have the opportunity to participate in the music with congas, tambourines, and any other percussion instrument they can drum up.

Two local elementary schools will host Trout Fishing in America in their classrooms for songwriting workshops. This program is designed to introduce children to the creative process of songwriting. It stimulates imaginations, increases interest in music and the arts, encourages teamwork, improves language skills and builds self-esteem. Trout Fishing in America begins by performing a couple of their original songs that come from everyday real life experiences. They guide the students through the development of a storyline by brainstorming for topics, then phrases and finally rhyming schemes. This is followed by melody suggestions and musical bridge ideas. Before you know it, the students have collectively started an original song.

Additional schools will host the 2005 Juneau Jazz & Classics Resident Ensemble in small music rooms for a unique and personal experience for the youth. Some schools will host a piano (Steve Heyman) violin (Gwen Thompson) and cello (Evan Drachman) trio. Others will host a viola (Brett Duebner) and guitar (Christopher Kenniff) duo. All through the week, the artists will be hard at work introducing school children to live classical music and sharing their musical knowledge and skills with the children.

Local performing groups including Ursa Minor, Aurora Strings, Ursa Major, Floyd Dryden Middle School Jazz Band, two JDHS Jazz Bands and the Thunder Mountain Big Band will work with Festival artists in a series of clinic-type sessions during the Festival. Then, together they will all perform as part of Community Day on Campus, Saturday, May 28th.

Juneau Jazz & Classics workshops are funded in part by grants from the City & Borough of Juneau (Sales Tax Revenues), the Alaska State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts. Additional support is sponsored by Alaska Litho.

Linda Rosenthal offers Lecture

Preview to Juneau Jazz & Classics’ Chamber Music Concerts

Friday, May 13th, 7pm, UAS Egan Library Lecture Hall

Learn more about chamber music and this year's Festival programs at Linda's lively, free, one-hour course. She'll provide a brief overview of the history of chamber music, and will offer ideas about what to listen for in this year’s concerts. If there are questions you’ve always had about chamber music but were afraid to ask, this program is for you! The event is free and open to the public.

Volunteers – Time to Sign Up

The Juneau Jazz & Classics “family” extends beyond the musical performances to a large community of dedicated and generous individuals who are personally involved in the success of the Festival. Our volunteers are tireless individuals who offer their time for the sole benefit of admission to a part of a concert, and the reward of having direct involvement in the presentation of fine music in Juneau.

Volunteers – its time to sign up! Contact our office by e-mail or phone with your preferences of shifts and events. We’ll do to the best we can to accommodate your requests.

In addition to our regular events – volunteers are needed for the following larger tasks. Contact our office for further information:

· Rental Car Coordinators

· Artists Packet Assembly

· Brown Bag Concert Coordinators

· Community Day on Campus Shift Help

· Daytime set up crews

· Technical Volunteer Coordinator

· Technical Volunteers

· And….the ever so fun piano move!

Volunteer benefits vary. All volunteers receive a complimentary t-shirt. Concert volunteers receive free admission to a portion, but usually not all, of the concert which they are helping with. Volunteers who assume larger roles, such as the coordinator positions above receive Festival passes.

If you are interested in learning more about our volunteer opportunities, please contact Juneau Jazz & Classics at (907) 463-3378.

Fishing Anyone?

We are currently compiling a list of Juneau experiences for our Festival artists. From fishing to hiking to kayaking to flightseeing – they are up for anything, provided that it fits into their busy residency schedules. Contact us if you are interested in helping show our beautiful area off to our artists.

RV Hospitality

The upcoming Festival will host three (3) events in a venue that does not have much of a green room for the artists. An RV would solve that problem! If you have an RV that would comfortably accommodate up to five people, hospitality spread of food and beverages and you are willing to donate it for three nights, please contact our office.

You are receiving this message because you indicated that you wanted to hear from us. If you would like to be removed from this list, please click reply and type “remove” into the subject line. It would help us if you would provide your name. Thanks!

We are pleased to announce the complete roster of artists lined up for the Festival. A complete Festival schedule will be announced mid-February.

Jazz & Blues Artists
The Holmes Brothers
Since they first joined forces and started performing together in 1979, the Virginia-born, New York based Holmes Brothers (bassist Sherman Holmes, guitarist/keyboardist Wendell Holmes and drummer Popsy Dixon) have been bringing their brand of gospel-inflected, spiritually moving and funky music to audiences around the world. The Holmes Brothers tour the country, and even the world, with their foot-stomping music, deeply soulful singing, chilling harmonies and telepathic musicianship. The Holmes Brothers amaze audiences and leave them in a state of utter disbelief. Of their live performances, The Boston Globe declares, "Straight-out, raw and real soul shouts, Jimmy Reed-influenced country blues, and juke-joint salvation. The Holmes Brothers can get down or raise crowds to sweaty bliss with soul-power."

Larry Coryell Trio
Versatile virtuoso guitarist Larry Coryell is a jazz fusion pioneer and seasoned musical traveler between the worlds of rock, jazz, classical and Brazilian rhythms. His innovative driving lines and dazzling technique, crafty use of space and complex chord structures generate an intensity matched by his obvious physical involvement with his music. All of Larry's work, both singly and collectively, highlights Larry's uncanny ability to revi
