KTWO: KTOO Record Collection Hangs Out in Douglas

KTMoMo visited a place called Truth Or Consequences, NM in October. It was a heavenly place for the hot spring lover, perhaps that should read (also) hotspring lover who is KTMoMo as deep and hot as it gets. But it is a very, very quirky town that is like a leftover from a bygone era, with bathhouse motels dating back to early and mid 20th century and those are the 'renovated' ones. The people who grow up there tend to leave, and those who have come, well, they are at least as interesting as the people who gravitate to Juneau. One fellow runs a business that specializes in tropical fish and some really fantastic tye dye and custom printed clothing. Dukatt 71, in case you are in need, will print anything for you and you can order online or via telephone. Ok, where's the tie-in? Inside and outside the shop are hung license plates from every state, almost every year, and many foreign countries too. It's an amazing and lovingly accumulated collection done with the help of kind customers. One outer wall is also entirely covered with CD's. They glisten, casting thousands of rainbows from their sunlit refraction gratings. It's really so dazzling as to be difficult to look at when the sun hits it full on. The Duke of Dukatt, whose name I unfortunately forget but it is available on a business card I left with Dave at Rainbow Foods, told me the secret to the wall. It is made with actual music CD's, probably none of them are Grateful Dead, and .... at night, when it is dark, the trick is to have somoene take your picture as you stand against the wall. The camera flash bouncing off the wall throws off a halo of rainbow brightness around you that is angelic.

Still wondering where is the tie-in? See Tony Carroll's article in the April 4, 2005 Juneau Empire.

I bet you were wondering what happened to all those records.... so drive by C.A. Bowman's house and take a look. Maybe we'll have another few good hot sunny summer days ahead to test how the whole thing holds up. Meawhile, listen to Cross Currents on KTOO, mornings 8:30 - 10:30 a.m., that is, on KTOO FM. Better yet, drive by Bowman's house on a sunny Wednesday between 8:30 and 10:30 and you can listen to his show and see his record collection at the same time.
