Check out Jason Donig at the KTOO Gallery

'Coilin', Fairweather Grounds, AK

“Every time I look out the window, I am blown away.
For those few that call Alaska home, you know what I mean.
Intoxicated, I find myself most in balance when I discover some new part of this great land.
The more places I explore, the greater still it becomes.”
--Artist Jason Donig

Jason Donig came to Alaska from Alberta, Canada in 1996, landing in Elfin Cove to go commercial fishing. Since then, his experiences working and traveling in Southeast Alaska and around the state have inspired his photographs, six of which currently hang on the bottom flight of the KTOO stairwell.

Jason originally shot both video and still images in order to share his experiences with friends and family back home. By 1998, he was photographing in earnest. He shoots slide film and black and white on a Nikon 35 mm SLR camera. And when he shoots, he really shoots! Jason shoots anywhere from 20 to 50 rolls of film on a project.

The work does not end there. The slides are scanned and then undergo hours of scrutiny in Photo Shop, cleaning up dust spots and resizing, before they are ready to print and mat. Jason also custom-made bamboo frames for these pictures. And, with the help of some high-tech friends, examples of his work are also accessible at www.authenticimages.net . Ultimately, these photographs are Jason’s way of capturing and sharing the moments of his Alaska experience.

Emerging from his work as a commercial fisherman and from his travels, each photograph hanging at KTOO has a story behind it that makes it special to Jason. Over the stairway is ‘A Blurred Wave’, shot in Kodiak this summer where Jason was seining. He shot this picture while camping out at Fossil Beach. He sees a head, eyes, and wings in these waves, faces and fingers too. ‘Coilin’’, at the top of the flight and also seen at the top of this page, is from the Fairweather Coast. It’s his favorite place he’s visited so far. The coil is the buoy line used for a longlining, seen as the fisherman is coiling gear to get to the buoy ball. It was a nice night, Jason liked the orange color and pattern the line made as it spiraled, and took the picture. Next is ‘Sein Opening’, from Sitka, seen at the bottom of this page. The gold colored boat Delta Dawn and the huge nets caught Jason’s attention. To him, the scene is ‘like the Wild West’, with skiffs and boats moving in a dance that is the one-chance, make-or-break moment of the season as the nets are hauled in. Across the stairwell is ‘Iditarod Checkpoint’, shot in McGrath. It captures the detail of fresh sleds waiting at a rest point for the mushers to come in. ‘King Crab’ comes from Juneau, a close zoom-in inside a hold of a King among crabs. Jason really wanted to get the mouth, although otherwise it is his least favorite because it does not tell any particular story. At the bottom of the stairway is ‘Stackin’ Net’, also from Sitka. Jason was working the skiff that dragged the boat as it set the net. The droplets catching light like jewels flying off the net are actually droplets of jellyfish.

Jason is driven to keep shooting by being in remote places, always ready to see something new, and from the satisfaction of bringing an image from a click of a shutter, through hours and hours of work to a seeing piece of his experience hanging on the wall.

All are welcome to view these photographs at KTOO, where they will hang for sale through February 3, 2005. There are plans in the works for another exhibit here in Juneau in March with all new material.

KTOO and Alaska Mountain Guides offer Kilimanjaro trip

NOTE: The sign up for this trip is now closed.

JUNEAU, AK (2005-01-21) KTOO and Alaska Mountain Guides are offering the trip of a lifetime! Join us for an unforgettable adventure to Tanzania, for a climb of Mt Kilimanjaro.

We climb Kilimanjaro via the Machame or Heim Glacier routes. These are fantastic routes with incredible scenery. The Machame is a non-technical route and gives climbers a chance to climb at altitude amidst an amazing backdrop. Many companies climb this route in 6 days, but we add an extra day to the itinerary to aid in acclimatization. This extra day, usually spent before Barafu camp, makes the push to the summit much easier and allows for a more comfortable experience.

The Heim Glacier route is a snow and glacier route that involves moderate angle climbing. Participants on the Heim Glacier route will need some past climbing experience. We do this route in 9 days. We combine both ascents of these routes with a descent of the normal route to complete a loop of the mountain. This is an amazing way to see all that Kilimanjaro has to offer, and to miss the crowds. Our itineraries are designed to give participants a positive high altitude experience. We have found that this makes a big difference in being well acclimatized and feeling strong for summit day!

For more information, call Alaska Mountain Guides at 800-766-3396 or visit their website at www.alaskamountainguides.com.

The cost of the trip is $2,200 and does not include airfare. The next departure is in March which will include summiting by full moon. There are other dates available as well.

Highlights

ARUSHA: This is where our trip begins and ends. Arusha is an interesting town located near some of Africa's best game viewing areas. It is a great spot to relax before and after the trip.
MACHAME OR HEIM GLACIER: Both of these routes include great hiking through all the unique ecological zones, fantastic views, and camps that are appropriately spaced for acclimatization.
KILIMANJARO'S CRATER: On our way to the summit we will hike right along the crater rim. This is definitely a highlight of the climb. There are awesome views of the glaciers both inside the crater, and down the Machame/ Shira routes!
LOOP ROUTE: By descending the normal route we complete a loop around the mountain. An exciting way to explore Kilimanjaro!
SAFARI OPTIONS: Climbing on Kilimanjaro can easily be combined with safaris in several of Africa's finest wildlife viewing areas including: Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater, and the Serengeti. Our safaris have both lodge and camping options. They are supported by private jeeps and drivers that make it possible to explore these unique places. Please contact us if you have any questions, or if you would like any additional information regarding our safaris.

Come to the KTOO Dog and Cat Show March 2005

Art with legs!

Can dogs and cats get along together? They can - if they’re part of KTOO’s upcoming Dog & Cat Show, scheduled for March, 2005.

During the course of a year, the station normally hosts the works of a variety of local artists. For a change, they decided to have a show dedicated to artwork featuring dogs and/or cats.

"We know many who have been inspired by their pets, and we’d like to showcase their art featuring those inspirations," said Jeff Brown, organizer of the show.

The exhibition is open to all kinds of artists, but is limited to work ready to hang, with a maximum size of 20" x 30", or free-standing, if a pedestal is provided. The art must arrive at KTOO during business hours between February 28th and March 2, unless other arrangements have been made.

"We open to most things, including art by dogs and cats themselves," said Brown. "As long as it’s presented well."

An opening night celebration is planned for Friday, March 4th at KTOO.

Works will be judged by a group of artists and pet lovers, and a variety of prizes donated by local businesses will be awarded. Many of the works will hang in the KTOO hallways for the month of March. Any proceeds from the sale of the works will benefit KTOO-FM, Juneau’s public radio station.

As part of the exhibit, KTOO-FM will also host a radio call-in program, inviting listeners to call in with their personal pet stories, as well as featuring songs about dogs and cats during various music shows.

For more information about this event, please call Jeff Brown at 463-6425.

Visit KTOO for music, news, arts and more.
