Go See the Science for Alaska Lecture Series!

JuneauMusic.com really enjoyed last Monday's Science for Alaska Lecture, 7:30 PM at Centennial Hall, on caves of Southeast Alaska. Almost enough to go spelunking. Almost. So, we urge one and all to take advantage of these multimedia, family-style *free* presentations Monday evenings in February. On the 28th, "Arctic Sea Ice: Diminishing Habitat for Seals and Walruses." And this coming Monday the 21st, "The Search for Water and Life on Mars." Will we want to try space flight? There's only one way to find out, and that's to go to the show.... but here's a preview courtesy KTOO.org below:

"Life on earth – and possibly in the rest of the universe – is believed to be prompted in large part by the formation of water – partly hydrogen which is a common element in the universe.

But finding water beyond the surface of the earth is currently beyond the ability of most scientists. So they’re relying on other means of detection or other technology to find it.

Latest explorations of the surface of Mars by satellites and landers have included photographic examinations of the geography which seem to indicate features formed by water flow. Landers are also examining the rocks of Mars – searching for less-obvious signs that water was once there.

Buck Sharpton, professor of geology and geophysics at the University of Alaska Fairbanks’ Geophysical Institute, will show a short film on the Mars rovers as part of his lecture on “The Search for Water and Life on Mars”"

Head, Heart, Hands and Health at the KTOO Gallery

Come to KTOO on Friday evening, February 4th from 4 to 6 pm for the opening of the Southeast Alaska 4-H Clubs Exhibit!

4-H in Southeast Alaska is a youth program sponsored by the UAF Cooperative extension service. The Clubs are putting on this exhibit as part of the University of Alaska Fairbanks/Cooperative Extension Service 75th Anniversary. As the work on display at KTOO shows, 4-H is a varied program designed to meet the needs of almost every young person. Some clubs, such as karate and dog obedience, are often for parents and other family members too. 4-H members do community service projects, attend congresses and conventions for teens around the state and the country, and find many opportunities for leadership. The Southeast Alaska 4-H clubs also offer tuition scholarships to members to attend University of Alaska.

Every young person can find something fun to learn about at 4-H. 4-H is about shooting sports, horsemanship, karate, sailing, running, sewing, painting, drawing, gardening, dancing, tying flies, camping, cross country skiing, dog obedience training, pet care, fishing, kayaking, carving, cooking and much more.

Come to KTOO to see the work of past and current 4-H members, from the square dance troupe, karate club, sailing club, tile mosaics, poetry, paintings, photographs and fishing flies, decoy ducks, and fantastic papier-mache creatures, and some of the many ribbons and awards garnered by Southeast Alaska 4-H members over the years. Enjoy refreshments and live music!

And, if you can’t make it this Friday, the exhibit will also be available for viewing during the month of February.
