KTOO Hosts "Sacred Planet" Screening

On Wednesday, April 20th, KTOO will host a screening of Sacred Planet, a film produced with Walt Disney productions with Robert Redford, and featuring the work of local KTOO-FM volunteer Cy Peck, Jr.

Sacred Planet is a journey away from the hectic world we live in. Through stunning cinematography, the film transports you to some of the most fascinating, exotic, and remote sites on Earth, giving you new insights into our planet's diverse landscapes, peoples, and animals. This mesmerizing, fascinating tour of faraway places and majestic creatures is an awe-inspiring wonder.

Cy Peck Jr. became involved in the project initially as a location consultant, but got more involved as the film developed, eventually serving as a writer and narrator for the film. He was also involved in the IMAX-production, EXTREME, about sports around the world.

"It looks easy, but it's a tough job with long hours," said Peck.

"The whole theme of Sacred Planet is choice'," continued Peck. "You can either pass by the bubble gum wrapper or pick it up."

Sacred Planet will be screened at KTOO on Wednesday, April 20 in the downstairs TV studio at 7 p.m. There is no admission charge.

LISTEN ON KTOO AS JUNEAU SYMPHONY AND CHORUS PERFORM MOZART’S REQUIEM

KTOO-FM will also be broadcasting live the Juneau Symphony's performance on Sunday afternoon at 3:00 pm. More information about the broadcast can be found by visiting KTOO’s website at www.ktoo.org. The Juneau Symphony performs Saturday, April 9th, 8:00 pm and Sunday, April 10th, 3:00 pm at the JDHS auditorium. The program includes Brahms’ Variations on a Theme by Haydn and Mozart’s Requiem featuring the Juneau Symphony Chorus.

The Juneau Symphony is thrilled to present the Juneau Symphony Chorus in its second appearance with the Symphony. Joining the orchestra for this performance are over 115 singers and local soloists Joyce Parry Moore, Catherine Pashigian, Dan Wayne, and John d’Armand.

Mozart’s Requiem was commissioned by Viennese Count Franz von Walsegg as a memorial to his wife Anna following her death in 1791. Written literally as Mozart lay on his deathbed and left unfinished at the time of his death later that year, the Requiem also became a memorial to the great composer himself. The Juneau Symphony will perform Mozart’s masterpiece on April 9 and 10, and at the request of symphony subscribers, will dedicate the concert in remembrance of past family members and friends of Juneau residents.

KTWO: KTOO Record Collection Hangs Out in Douglas

KTMoMo visited a place called Truth Or Consequences, NM in October. It was a heavenly place for the hot spring lover, perhaps that should read (also) hotspring lover who is KTMoMo as deep and hot as it gets. But it is a very, very quirky town that is like a leftover from a bygone era, with bathhouse motels dating back to early and mid 20th century and those are the 'renovated' ones. The people who grow up there tend to leave, and those who have come, well, they are at least as interesting as the people who gravitate to Juneau. One fellow runs a business that specializes in tropical fish and some really fantastic tye dye and custom printed clothing. Dukatt 71, in case you are in need, will print anything for you and you can order online or via telephone. Ok, where's the tie-in? Inside and outside the shop are hung license plates from every state, almost every year, and many foreign countries too. It's an amazing and lovingly accumulated collection done with the help of kind customers. One outer wall is also entirely covered with CD's. They glisten, casting thousands of rainbows from their sunlit refraction gratings. It's really so dazzling as to be difficult to look at when the sun hits it full on. The Duke of Dukatt, whose name I unfortunately forget but it is available on a business card I left with Dave at Rainbow Foods, told me the secret to the wall. It is made with actual music CD's, probably none of them are Grateful Dead, and .... at night, when it is dark, the trick is to have somoene take your picture as you stand against the wall. The camera flash bouncing off the wall throws off a halo of rainbow brightness around you that is angelic.

Still wondering where is the tie-in? See Tony Carroll's article in the April 4, 2005 Juneau Empire.

I bet you were wondering what happened to all those records.... so drive by C.A. Bowman's house and take a look. Maybe we'll have another few good hot sunny summer days ahead to test how the whole thing holds up. Meawhile, listen to Cross Currents on KTOO, mornings 8:30 - 10:30 a.m., that is, on KTOO FM. Better yet, drive by Bowman's house on a sunny Wednesday between 8:30 and 10:30 and you can listen to his show and see his record collection at the same time.
