Silverbow Delhi?


Attention customers. Due to high local labor costs, management has decided that as of this week Silverbow Bagels production will be outsourced to our satellite bakery in India. Bagels, bread, and pastries will be shipped fresh via Air India Cargo and will be available at the store within days of baking. About ten local staff are affected. Silverbow Delhi production manager Shmeercrim Chisonit is happy for the opportunity to provide "fresh" product to the Juneau market.

April Fool, of course! All our products are made fresh from scratch right here at our Downtown Juneau kitchen, the oldest bakery in the state of Alaska. Thankfully, some things can't be globalized!

Wine Tasting March 28th!


Dear Wine Lovers,
Next Tuesday, March 28th from 5:30 -7:30, Specialty Imports and The Silverbow Inn will be sponsoring one of the most exciting and delicious wine events of the season. Glenn Schulman of Maisons Marques & Domaines will be visiting Juneau for the day and will host a tasting of some of the most wonderful wines on the planet.

John will be pouring nine wines from South Africa, France, Portugal and California.

The wines will include:

Dominus Estate Napanook, a Bordeaux blend from Napa made by the world famous wine maker Christian Moueix.

Meerlust Rubicon, a stunning Bordeaux blend from South Africa so you can compare and contrast.

Marc Bredif Vouvray, changing what you think Vouvray is and how you feel about Chenin Blanc.

La Pouisse Sancerre, the Vrai McQuois, get your shellfish out.

Deutz Brut Classic, the Champagne that has made several of our staff, including myself, swoon.

And Ramos Pinto Port for dessert.

Here is our awesome 2006 Silverbowlers at the annual employee party! Everybody had a wingding of a good time, and we had a surprise belated birthday party for Jim, who was recently promoted to Kitchen Manager. All in all it was a striketabulous evening.

Quiche is excellent for both breakfast and lunch. Our 2 varieties include Bacon Cheddar and Broccoli Cheese, but if they prove popular more will follow. Quiche fans, e-mail us your favorites!

Spanikopita; this flaky savory appetizer made of spinach, feta, spices, and phyllo dough can be added to your dinner, lunch, and/or reception.

Congratulations to Lee Reynolds on his promotion to assistant baker! Every time you enjoy a fresh baked bagel at the Silverbow say "Thanks Lee." He enjoys playing in his metal band, and driving around in his truck with a ridiculously expensive sound system while letting everyone for 3 blocks hear his music.

Congratulations to Tess Cannon! Tess received the prestigious Sullivan Leadership Award, which is a four-year full scholarship to Seattle University. She was picked from thousands of applicants across the country & is this first from Alaska to have won.

Congratulations to Caitlin Bedford! She won third place in the Sixth Annual Wearable Arts Show with her outfit "Once You Pop, the Fun Don't Stop", made of soda can pop-tabs. This makes her second year in a row placing in the top three! Her boyfriend if very proud of her!

We now have a whole grain bagel with flax seeds called the Hippie Dippie which will rotate with the Energy Bar. It is named for all the friendly hippies who asked us to make a whole wheat bagel.

Design Forum

The Alaska Design Forum Series "Roots" Continues with landscape architect Robert France's lecture on Wetland Design. The lecture will be held on February 22nd here at the Back Room at 7:30.


Employee Spotlight-Samantha Carpenter
This month’s employee spotlight is on Samantha “Sam” Carpenter, who is absolutely batty about bats. She developed an interest at the young age of 11, and is also passionate about relating their natural history. Why bats? Well, in her words, “There is such mystery, beauty, sophistication, complexity... (she says she can go on forever) ...wrapped up in this tiny mammal.” She has assisted field courses at The University of Pittsburgh, Syracuse University, The Chautauqua Institute, and Antioch New England Graduate School, and specializes in catching and lecturing on bats. She is currently working at the Silverbow to pay off tuition so that she can finish her undergraduate degree, and go on to graduate school. She has her sites set on obtaining her PhD, and teaching Mammalian Studies at the college level. She plans to get her masters in chiroptology (the study of bats) in the next five years. Sam has been working at Silverbow since she moved here with her dog Seton in August. She enjoys it because of the friendly environment and the variety of interesting people she meets. Glad to have you here Sam.

Jump Film Festival

It's that time again! Time for another astounding assortment of artisticly amplified actions by able-bodied artists from all-around Juneau!
The first Jump Film Festival of 2006 will be held on the following dates:

Friday Jan 20th @ 7pm & 9pm
Friday Jan 27th @ 7pm & 9pm
Saturday Jan 28th @ 7pm & 9pm

Also, the deadline for submission of your short film is January 7th

Filmmaker Workshop

There will be a filmmaker workshop on Saturday January 28th and Sunday January 29th at the Silverbow Back Room with Warren Etheredge of The Film School and The Warren Report.
Both of which will be free and open to all filmmakers and aspiring filmmakers.
